In this scene, Diana runs down the white steps to the old boathouse, where Jan is waiting in the rowing boat to whisk her away to Nun's Island. A contact in Cornwall is fairly certain that this scene was filmed at the Bathing Hut on the grounds of Pentillie Castle. His recent photo certainly provides an excellent match, although the film was obviously shot from a different angle. www.oliverscornwall.co.uk/pentilliebathinghut.jpgHere are the original screen captures:

I received a reply from the present owners of Pentillie Castle, who sent me a terrific photo of the cottage and Bathing Hut. They confirmed that the scene is unquestionably Pentillie. The Pentillie location is unusual, as this is supposed to be the dock where Diana is whisked away in a row boat to Nun's Island by John Leigh. Considering that Nun's Island (actually Looe Island in the film) is out at sea, the Pentillie location was a very clever mock up. The BBC obviously used a powerful telephoto lens to help create the illusion of a seaside dock. It now seems quite clear to me that the BBC must have added a temporary set piece construction to the quay, as it appears much larger than in any of the present day photos. They also placed a few barrels and crab pots around to create a coastal illusion.

Here is the photo supplied by Sammie Coryton of Pentilie Castle and Estate, showing the Quay Cottage and Bath House. Note: Photo has been greatly reduced in size.
